Professional Development

Teachers with Regina Public Schools are require to document their Professional Development activities.  After experimenting with blogging this past term in #eci831 I have decide to create a page on my course blog to document my Professional Development and Learning.

University Courses

Fall 2013,

EC&I 831 Open Education and Social Media

EC&I 831: Social Media & Open Education is an open access graduate course from the Faculty of Education, University of Regina. This course is available to both for-credit and non-credit participants. It features openly available, weekly, interactive presentations with notable educators & theorists. More importantly, the course encourages and nurtures rich interaction through a number of open spaces such as our Twitter hashtag (#eci831), our Google Plus Community, and our student blog hub. The open nature of the course. and the sharing that it inspires, benefits current and former participants, especially as the goal of the course is to foster and develop long-term, authentic, human connections.

Summer 2013,

EC&I 811 Current Issues and Research in Early Childhood Education (3)
A critical examination of theories, research and literature related to current issues in Early Childhood Education will involve students in collecting and analyzing data and formulating hypotheses.

EC&I 813 Play and Learning (3)
An examination of play as children’s natural way of learning and its contribution to all areas of development and relationship to current curriculum theory.

The ECE Summer Institute provides students with:

  • A space to engage with other early childhood practitioners;
  • A background in practice, theory, and research in early childhood education;
  • An opportunity to infuse these understandings of early childhood education with an understanding of creating equitable and just learning contexts and experiences by shifting curricular, policy, and structural decisions based on the hopes and dreams of children, families, and communities; and,
  • Opportunities to strengthen or re-imagine practice through play, art and narrative.

Winter, 2013

EC&I 871 A&E Critical Issues in Second Language Education

This course examines the relationship between language and power in second language teaching and learning. The use of insights from critical applied linguistics literature, drawing on notions of pedagogy, discourse analysis, and approaches to language teaching and testing, will be applied to second language classroom situations.

Fall, 2012

ED 800 Introduction to Educational Research (3)
Introduction to educational research with an emphasis on reading research and understanding the research process. Topics include the nature of research, current issues in educational research, a variety of basic types of research and research designs, the literature review, critical reading of and interpreting of various types of research.

Winter, 2012

EC&I 804 Curriculum Development (3)
This course considers key concepts and forces involved in shaping curriculum decision making, theories of curriculum and practical aspects of planning, implementation, evaluation and research.

Professional Learning

Provincial Math Learning Community Member

Within the context of a community of learners, educators will be asked to examine their practice and to explore a number of research based instructional practices that been shown to have a positive impact on student. Educators will be given the opportunity to plan cooperatively and field test these strategies in classrooms and report their findings back the learning community.
